McCall stared at her for a moment and D.J. held her breath, afraid he would give voice to the current that hummed between them, despite all her attempts to make it stop. Then he grinned at her, and her lips twitched in response, though she didn't actually let herself smile at him. "Glad to see you're back to your always pleasant self. You must have gotten a decent night's sleep." |

"Me, too. Though I have to say I'd rather sleep in my own way than have sleep forced upon me." |

They left the hospital, and D.J. led the way to her truck. Once inside, she turned to McCall. "Lou said your house was ransacked. Do you have any idea why? What turned up missing?" |

"Nothing missing that I could tell. I don't need much. I write and draw, travel a bit. My house is pretty bare; just the necessities. The only things to steal would be the television, VCR, and computer. Every one of those items is still there, although the television is smashed into a thousand pieces. Since they didn't break anything else, I have to think that was accidental. Maybe it fell off the entertainment center when they were looking behind it." He shrugged. "I don't know how thieves work." |
